WHAT'S HAPPENING WITH HEALTH CARE?
Yesterday (Friday, July 14, 2017) Senator Mitch McConnell came back with a new bill which still makes huge cuts to Medicaid and still allows for insurance companies to sell plans that deny coverage based on pre-existing conditions. The Congressional Budget Office estimates of how many people are covered (and how many people will lose coverage) are scheduled to be delivered next week. But the bottom line is the same: voting yes for this bill will take away health care coverage for millions of Americans and impose higher premiums and reduced coverage for our most vulnerable. [This is true even when Senator McCain returns from his government paid for surgery]

As of right now, the question is whether he has the votes in the Senate that he needs to get this bill passed (a minimum of 50 of the 52 Republican votes, which would create a tie likely to be broken by Vice President Pence). Two Republican Senators have issued firm Nos. One more No vote would mean the bill fails.

Now is the time to step up to the plate! A few simple phone calls could be the difference between life and death for millions of Americans.

Please use the scripts and the lists of Senators below to express your concerns. There are two separate scripts, based on whether the Senator is in favor of a more moderate plan, or a more conservative plan. Regardless of why the Senator might vote No, we want that No vote!

Only have time for one call per Senator? Use the (202) numbers for their Washington offices.

Please post this to your pages and encourage your friends (especially in the home states of these senators) to call!

SCRIPT 1: Hello, I'm calling Senator ________________ to express my concerns about the revised health care bill. With significant cuts to Medicaid and allowances for insurance companies to sell unregulated plans that restrict coverage, this plan will leave millions of Americans without the health care that they need to live. [Insert personal anecdote here if you have one.] Please, please vote NO on this bill!

SCRIPT 2: Hello, I'm calling Senator ________________ to express my concerns about the revised health care bill. Senator McConnell is not honoring the full repeal of the ACA as he promised and I am concerned that this will not lower my healthcare costs. The government should not be in the business of subsidizing insurance companies. We need a better bill - please, please vote NO!
