Today is a day of ignominy. It was a day of celebration. It is hard to celebrate when so many will suffer.

On June 26, 2003, in a decision entitled Lawrence vs. Texas, the Supreme Court voted 6-3 that same sex adults were free as adults to engage in private conduct in the exercise of their liberty under the Due Process Claus, and that so-called sodomy laws were unconstitutional.

On June 26, 2013, in a decision entitled United States v. Windsor, the Supreme Court voted by 5-4 that the Defense of Marriage Act (or DOMA) was unconstitutional restricting U.S. federal interpretation of "marriage" and "spouse" to apply only to opposite-sex unions and that Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) was unconstitutional under the Due Process Clause of the Fifth Amendment, as a "deprivation of the equal liberty of persons that is protected by the Fifth Amendment."

On June 26, 2015, in a decision entitled Obergefell vs. Hodges the Supreme Court ruled in a 5–4 decision that the fundamental right to marry is guaranteed to same-sex couples by both the Due Process Clause and the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution.

And now this! June 26, 2018.

In a decision entitled Trump vs. Hawaii, the Supreme Count ruled 5-4 in favor of Trump's travel ban, stating that indefinitely banning people from particular countries was a lawful use of the president's power under the Immigration and Nationality Act, which allows the executive branch to suspend the entry of a "class" of people if the government "finds that the entry of any aliens or of any class of aliens into the United States would be detrimental to the interests of the United States."

Today is a Day of Ignominy. It is hard to celebrate when so many will suffer and America is closing down.

June 26 has been a special and happy day. Now there is a shadow that will always mar the rainbow.
